Speak up, Speak out, Mental Health affects us all.
What’s good my people? Over the last few months I have become more and more aware of the Mental Health Epidemic that is affecting us, not just in Africa, but around the world. Whether it’s anxiety, schizophrenia or depression, more and more people are suffering. Unfortunately, many are suffering in silence. Especially on the continent where stigma and lack of knowledge create an atmosphere where people are afraid to speak out.
When you add the pressure of perfection and the illusion of it created by social media, more and more young people are being sucked into the abyss of depression and many have no outlet simply because we don’t talk anymore. Most of us have our social ecosystem that we create around ourselves, what’s unfortunate is that for many, that ecosystem has social media and communication apps as an integral part of its construct.
That’s why meeting Keri Hilson recently was a refreshing change. Here was a well-known recording artist, accomplished song writer and business woman, a bonafide celebrity willing and open to talk about her struggle with depression. It was a great conversation, you can listen to it here.
Selah!
