Are You In Your Moment?

Are You In Your Moment?

“I am Warhol. I am the No. 1 most impactful artist of our generation. I am Shakespeare in the flesh. Walt Disney, Nike, Google — now who’s going to be the Medici family and stand up and let me create more or do you want to marginalize me until I’m out of my moment …”

When I first heard this Kanye rant on Sway a few years ago, like most people I was shocked, not because of it’s content, but because he was going at a hip hop icon like Sway in such an aggressive way. I am pretty sure that people who are deep in the hip hop game were like “WTF?”

Today it’s a quote that has been ringing  in my head. When you are on vacation you have a lot of time to think and the line that keeps hitting me is ” let me create more, or do you want to marginalize me until I’m out of my moment …”. My moment .. What does that even mean, what is “my moment?”

The more I think about it, the more I think that Kanye meant that period of your life when you are at your most powerful. When I say power, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are rich, famous or stuff like that. I means that moment when have a real chance to fulfill your potential.

For me, I left high school at 19, by 21 I was running a pirate radio station in London. (I won’t bore you with details, my bio is just a page away) All I ever wanted to do is radio, so you would think that I am living my moment, and to some extent, I am. Having been around the sun a few times, however, I am only now beginning to understand the importance of living your moment. Life isn’t infinite and when I look back at my journey I am proud of where I am and where I’ve been, I’ve also gotten a level of insight that I didn’t have in my 20’s

Many of us are standing in the way of our greatness. We are scared of being great. Straight up. Somewhere along the line, we have accepted what is as what can be. You need to start NOW. Greatness requires focus, greatness requires tenacity, greatness takes effort. Don’t just be good, be great. Start where you are standing now. Do an honest analysis of where your life is now. What are your dreams, what do you want to achieve, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Write your dreams down, have them stare at you from the page. Let them question you, interrogate you. Sure, it’s great to get “turnt” every weekend, but what will your 40 year old self ask you? I believe in living life to the full, so in no way am I saying that you shouldn’t enjoy your life. Just be cognizant of your moment, that moment when you are at your most powerful, the moment when you can scale unimaginable heights. Now could be your moment.

Don’t let your fear marginalize you until your out of your moment …
